Technology
Ok, so I am also a bit of a technology geek. I maintain my own IPv4 and IPv6 computer network at home with my own server. This server, running a recent version of the Fedora Core OS, handles my own internal name space (using named and dhcpd), processes my own email (using sendmail, cyrus-imap, MailScanner and horde) and hosts my own website (using a postgresql database, PHP and Apache). If the previous sentence did not make any sense to you, this page is not for you. I like to store copies of DVD/Bluray movies I bought on my server. To facilitate that I have two raid-6 arrays of seven 4TB disks with a total capacity of twentyeight terabytes each. The net (with two disk redundancy) capacity is twenty terabytes each. These raid-6 arrays are also home to my 75,000 (2014) now 85,000 (2016) digital photos. One of the two arrays holds the original files, the other is an (automagically synced) backup. On top of that I keep a 2TB external disk in the trunk of my car. About once a month, I sync photos to this this disk manually. You see, I really, really, do not want to loose my photos. There are two wireless APs (both 5 GHz and 2.4GHz) on the network. This is to facilitate the ever growing number of iPhones, iPads, Macs, and what nots guests bring to our home and expect to work. I have two independent internet connections (VDSL, and Cable). A dual wan router auto balances the load between these two links. I use xymon (before that Big Brother) to monitor the network; remotely if necessary. Isn't this all very cool? I'd love to show you all the inner workings of my network; but alas not all of you as as friendly as you are! The picture shown here is the logical network map of my home network, version 3.0. Click to see the map in its original size in a separate window. The nice little red brick wall in this picture is my very cool and very, very strict firewall.
